Hey all.
I'm flying down to Texass in January to be part of this Zentri weekend extravaganza, but have no experience flying with my bike. Is there any way to avoid the ridiculous surcharges that airlines like to throw around? Any softshell cases I can rent that would let me check it w/o paying through the nose?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. |

I can't help with US flights, but if anybody is flying continental try British Airways. Flew from the UK to IM Florida this year with BA and my bike was free, flew with Delta last year and got screwed $150 each way.
It meant that this year I had to drive rather than fly from Atlanta to PCB but that's a small price to pay.

I try to remain calm, but the way airlines are ripping us off PISSING ME OFF!!! My friend flew to the Caymans and back and his ticket was less than the price of getting his bike there and back! Did his bike require AC? No. Did his bike require a Coke and a mint? No! WTF?
Anybody have any suggestions? We need help!

I flew Continental the beginning of October for the Brita Climate Ridehttp://www.climateride.org/ and was only charged $20!!! From New Orleans connecting in Houston then on to NYC. Total of $20. It was only one way though.
I got an old cardboard box from the trash pile of a local bike shop, packed my vintage road bike and brought it to the ticket counter. I hate Continental, but they really treated me right that trip!

I flew from Europe to California with my bike this spring... Got charge $120 on KLM/Northwest, was using my bikebag. I can recommend those, they are affordable and sturdy, the only thing better would be a hard case...

Unfortunately, one of my carbon wheels got damaged by some throwers, ehrm, baggage handlers... Filed an insurance claim and after being very persistent, they paid for a new wheel....

A lot of opinion says that cardboard boxes are the way to go because the baggage handlers actually 'handle' it then rather than just launching it about as if it's unbreakable. I noticed that Macca had his (three) bikes in plain delivery cardboard boxes when he flew from Hawaii. I guess that it doesn't really matter if his bikes get trashed though...................... and he still got screwed for excess baggage.
